The two-island state in the West Indies named Saint Kitts and Nevis has a drinking age of 18 years old. You can both buy and drink alcohol legally once you turn 18. This makes it very attractive to the younger crowd. People go for the beaches and parties, but beware of the wild monkeys; they like to pick up unattended drinks and get drunk and a bit disorderly.
Coming and Going with Alcohol
Generally, you will not have a problem going through customs entering St. Kitts and Nevis. There are no restrictions on your personal items, but will have to limit the amount of alcohol you are bringing. You can have 1.136 liters of wine or liquor in your baggage without having to get rid of it. If you have more than that, it will be confiscated. Do not worry though, there are plenty of places to get your favorite drink on the island.
When you go to leave, you can take two liters of Caribbean alcohol back with you without having to pay duties on it. If you are taking returning to the United States, you must be 21 years old to take any alcohol with you.
Favorite Places to Party on the Islands
Frigate Bay has a large hut made of wood called Ziggy’s that is a popular place to go and enjoy the beach while drinking a house specialty name appropriately Ocean. Made of cane alcohol and citrus juices, it is just the right drink for the atmosphere and will have you digging your toes in the sand and relaxing. If you are up for some karaoke, Mr. X’s Shiggidy Shack has beachfront bonfires and continual karaoke. When you need to lube up your vocal chords, they offer a rum punch that will have you singing all your favorites.
About the Drunken Monkeys
A few decades ago, a group of tourists gave the some of the island’s wild monkeys mojitos. The monkeys, brought to the islands by pirates, liked the flavor and effect and have been picking up abandoned drinks ever since. While you might think it is cute or funny, the animals can become aggressive when drunk so you should avoid them and do not give them any alcohol. They might not be very big, but can be quite strong, especially when drunk.
St. Kitts and Nevis is a great place to go and do some scuba diving or just hang out on the beach. If you are not certified to dive, it is a good place to take lessons and have your first underwater experience. It is not yet a hot popular spot, due to its small size, so it is not as busy as some of the other Caribbean islands so you won’t feel overcrowded or hurried. The weather is great, the water warm and the hospitality inviting. If you envision beach shacks and dance parties on the beach at night, you should take your next vacation on the islands.
